The Drostei Foundation opens the most comprehensive solo exhibition in Germany to present and honor the work of Detlef Allenberg on the occasion of the artist’s 77th birthday.

Born in 1938 in Königsberg, East Prussia, Detlef Allenberg is one of the most prominent graphic artists of his generation in Northern Germany. Living in Pinneberg and Hamburg, he studied fine arts at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts and German literature / philology at the University of Hamburg.

The title of the exhibition “Metamorphoses” addresses these motifs, presenting a fascinating selection of unpublished works of art, new paintings, prints, engravings, sculptures from different periods of Allenberg’s fifty-year career.

Acting as an archaeologist, Detlef Allenberg explores stratifications during his creative work process, loosening or closing them, combining collage, painting, rubbing and etching to integrate them into a single work. While using found and homemade objects to create relief elements, he prints them on special paper, so that the shapes gain a new identity of form and depth which is further enhanced by the use of color.

Inspired by the resulting structures, associations occurred which the artist reshaped into new pictorial universes. Finally it is a process of construction and reduction. Allenberg takes advantage of each metamorphosis to explore new areas of experience of incomparable scope, in which the boundaries between the so-called real world and illusion become increasingly blurred.

The unconscious, fantasy, reality, irony and reflection are linked in the work of Detlef Allenberg. It is a characteristic feature of all his work. Through this work, Allenberg questions what is the real world – that of night and dreams – or that of the waking state.

In conclusion, throughout Allenberg’s life, his proficient knowledge of all varieties of graphic techniques and methods, and his efforts gave him the experience and the invitations to exhibit in over a hundred exhibitions, including exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands and the American states.

Allenberg’s work raises the question of recent changes in social constellations. How do people live together? How do they communicate? What roles do they play? Allenberg’s hybrid figures, especially his mythical bird creatures, are surreal constructs between humans and animals.

Staged as in a strange phantasmal masquerade, these hybrid creatures have become the constant companions of Detlef Allenberg. They share identities on several levels. But who is the real personality behind the mask? If you want to explore it, take the time to visit the current retrospective exhibition of this poet, philosopher, painter, actor, sculptor, multi-level graphic designer and even – gentle anarchist.
