In what marks a glorious return to filmmaking after a nearly 20-year absence, John Waters (Baltimore’s favorite son and American movie’s favorite degenerate) will write and direct an adaptation of his 2022 debut novel, Liarmouth: a sentimental romance.

The adaptation, which will be produced by Village Roadshow Pictures, will be Waters’ first time on camera since 2004. A dirty shame.

Described by library newspaper as “an unbroken assortment of robbery, deceit, and rancor fueled by a relentless, shamelessly sexualized comedic genius”, and by Molly Young in the New York Times as “a maze of anarchy that is fully readable only by its creator”, Liarmouth is the story of three generations of women (a pet plastic surgeon, a lying suitcase thief, and the owner of a closed trampoline park) who conspire to clash and/or kill each other.

Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s only fitting that my novel was shocking enough to kick-start my movie career again,” said the Pink flamingos, hair sprayand crybaby director. “I’m thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully spreading some crazy joy to adventurous moviegoers everywhere.”
