A former head of the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) has warned that Extinction Rebellion is an extreme anarchist group and should be treated as such.

Richard Walton, senior researcher at Policy Exchange, says the climate protest movement seeks a “subversive agenda” rooted in political extremism, eco-socialism and radical anti-capitalism.

Formed in 2018, the group is now made up of tens of thousands of followers spread across hundreds of local groups – Mr Walton says this is a campaign by a pre-existing network of activists called ‘Rising Up ! company called Compassionate Revolution Ltd, which he says has its origins in the Occupy anti-globalization movement.

He calls on politicians to stop endorsing or legitimizing the group, which he says promotes a “post-capitalism” and “degrowth” ideology, encourages law breaking, increases the burden on British police and causes serious economic and social disruption.

Mr Walton even suggests “that it is not inconceivable that some on the fringes of the movement may at some point break with organizational discipline and engage in violence” and calls on the police to be much more proactive in the application. laws relating to public demonstrations.

He argues that legislation needs urgent reform to support this and says the Crown Prosecution Service should prosecute offenders to uphold the rule of law and act as a deterrent.

The former terrorism chief adds that the Home Office should also audit the financial cost of the illegal protest activity undertaken by Extinction Rebellion.

He said: “The ‘model of civil resistance’ they espouse is intended to provoke mass protests accompanied by breaches of the law, ultimately leading to the collapse of democracy and the state. Masked from public view, these goals mark the Extinction Rebellion campaign as an extremist campaign that seeks to shatter the established civil order and liberal democracy in the UK.

“Many Extinction Rebellion followers completely ignore this secondary goal, although it is easily embraced by their leaders in their YouTube posts of their speeches and in their posts. Celebrities, politicians and members of the public have been deceived into believing that Extinction Rebellion’s methods and tactics are honorable and justified, when they clearly are not.

Extinction Rebellion responded to the report in a tweet: “We are raising our hands. He’s an honest cop. We are guilty. We try to publicize #ecocide because we love life too much to sit idly by and let government inaction on the climate and ecological crisis kill it. Join us, rebel.
