Back to School with Lina Batista

After a long, restful and restorative summer, being back in the city of Philadelphia is amazing and nostalgic! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Lina Batista. I am an actor, singer, creative and student based in Jersey Born Philadelphia. I am attending the University of the Arts and experiencing my fourth and final year as a major in Musical Theater! I just can’t believe I’m finally able to say this officially! By May of the coming year, I will have my dream degree and be ready to take the industry by storm! However, I am not there yet. I always try to ground myself and center myself by living in the present and really giving my full attention to what I’m doing. Since this is my last fall semester, that means I have plenty of room in my schedule to take classes I’ve always wanted to take.

My schedule is quite busy, but one of the many classes I take and by far my favorite is a class called “Music Theater Performance” taught by the great Kyle Metzger. This class is required for all four years of college, but his view of this class is life-changing. Previously, the format for this class was that we would bring in a song each week that matched the appropriate criteria that were assigned. We mainly work on our acting skills through song. However, in Kyle’s class, his format resembles an audition room. I’ve never had an “in-person audition” outside of college auditions, so the way this class de-stigmatizes the agony and negativity one can feel is very fulfilling. So far in this course I have learned that auditioning is a state of mind and that I, the actor, have all the control in the play. I learned that the people behind the panel want to see you succeed and want you to be the answer to their casting problems. More importantly, I learned when to use my confidence as a performer. I’ve found ways to tame my negative thoughts and ground myself in those moments with something as simple as mantras. I look forward to what this semester has to offer within this class and its tools will be embedded in my education forever. I can’t thank Kyle enough and will be forever grateful for his time and knowledge!

Another exciting thing that happened was that I was part of a senior project at my university! My colleague Santiago Castro wrote this project. He majored in directing, playwriting, and producing with a major in playwriting at UArts and has written life-changing works. His piece “Visionces Del Cuerpo” brings the audience into the body of a Latinx person, moving through mind, heart and muscle. It explores what it feels like to experience culture in your abdomen. Trauma in the blood vessels? Joy in the lungs? How does space affect how memories are revisited? How does mental illness affect taste buds? This piece is an anarchist‘s meditation on all that has ever been stored in the body. A reminder of where we come from and the regeneration of cells and memories. I played the role of “Hands” in this play. It was such a moving experience to create this imagined work in just ten rehearsals! It was a gift to be in a room with all the Latinx actors and creators, something that needs to happen more in the theater world! It was a piece that taught me so much about myself and my artistic process and I’m honored to have been a part of such meaningful work.

To conclude, the first weeks of the semester were made up of rehearsals, exciting artistic discoveries and memories that will remain etched in my memory for the rest of my life! I can’t wait to take you with me on what’s more to come this year! Stay tuned, you’re in for a final year filled with love, laughter, hard work, and most importantly, FUN!
