A teenager has been arrested for listening to rap music in his card with the Windows down, while waiting for his mother.

Arrested for listening to explicit rap

A TEENAGER has been arrested for listening to what police deemed to be offensive rap music.

In what could be a legal test case, Nathan Michael Wilkie, 19, faces one charge of offensive behaviour after police arrested him while he was listening to music by underground rapper Kid Selzy on his car stereo.

Wilkie was parked outside a supermarket in Timboon, near Warrnambool, waiting for his mother, when he was arrested.

The Warrnambool Magistrates Court heard Wilkie was listening to rap with explicit lyrics such as “shut your f . . . . . . mouth bitch, f. . . motherf. . . . .”

The court was told the arresting officers found the music offensive and derogatory to females.

Mr Wilkie allegedly told officers: “You’re a joke, go do some real police work”.

The teenager is believed to be the first person charged under Australian law with offensive behaviour for listening to music.

Wilkie plans to plead not guilty when his case continues on June 11.

In a statement, Wilkie said he was thankful to have the support of Kid Selzy, who planned to attend the June hearing.

“As Selzy said, `I know what I mean and the people who buy it know what I mean, and that’s what really matters’,” Wilkie said.

“I have lost two of my best mates in the last couple of years in tragic circumstances and I feel that listening to his music relates to life.”

Kid Selzy, who gave his real name only as Jack, said he was astounded at the arrest. “It’s a joke that some kid’s been arrested for doing something that’s not illegal,” he said.

“It’s not illegal to have your windows down or to buy a CD. It seems to be a waste of taxpayers’ dollars. If profanity’s not your thing, don’t listen.”

And South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, gets his Christian religious crazy on, yet again.

A GROUP that says video games and violence are like smoking and lung cancer has received tens of thousands of dollars in funding from SA Attorney-General and outspoken R18+ game critic Michael Atkinson.

An expert from the Australian Council on Children and the Media this week told a TV news program the link between violent games and youth violence was stronger than tobacco and cancer.

“It’s much greater than the effect of smoking on lung cancer,” psychologist Dr Wayne Warburton said.

It’s the strongest claim yet in the war of words over video game ratings which has heated up after a call for public input on the issue that drew 55,000 submissions.

A spokesman for Mr Atkinson told news.com.au his department provided an annual grant to the council under its trading name Young Media Australia.

The grant is to support a project called “Know Before You Go” that offers parents information about which films are suitable for children.

Relevance, you may ask?  Well this ties into the whole attitude of Australian instititutions towards censorship and expression.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-VICTORIA:
THE POLICE HAVE LOST THEIR MARBLES:
It's been almost 3 weeks since a highly successful anti-Olympics protest in Victoria BC (see No2010 Victoria for more news on what's happening out that way). At the time the local media picked up on some "marble throwing incident" to, they hoped, spice up their coverage and also incidentally discredit the protesters. Since then this incident has become the "incredibly shrinking story". Here's Larry Gambone of the Porkupine Blog on how the incident was far less than what was reported at first, and how it may have a totally different implication than what was originally implied in the media.
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
Olympic Torch Protest - the so-called marble throwing incident.:
I have waited 3 weeks to do this story to see if anything new came up – so far nothing, so here goes...

On the night of the anti-Olympic protest the Victoria TV station was screaming about “cowardly protesters throwing marbles at police horses” and that “a young man with a back pack full of marbles had been arrested.” This way they drummed up hate among the sheeple against a rather successful protest.

Then the Times Colonist got in the act too with a similar line. Funny thing, the story then dropped out of sight.

Even odder was the fact that no one was arrested. Surely if the police had gotten their hands on someone who tried to throw marbles at them, they would be dragged off bleeding to the hoosegow.

Odd too, is the idea that NO2010 would somehow endorse such a stupid, counter-productive tactic. Of course they didn't.

Turns out no one actually threw any marbles, rather they were dropped. But then it gets muddy. Who did it and why did they do it?

There are a number of different viewpoints. First two letters to the Times Colonist:
"Just a note on the 'marble fiasco'. Maybe the media could take a second and follow-up on their so-called 'sources' (the police, and a woman who found a handful of marbles on the street) on marble THROWING. Being at the protest, I saw what happened with the marbles. None were thrown. Someone had them in his pocket (I would like to know why, but since carrying marbles is not a crime, I didn't feel it necessary to ask), his pocket broke and they FELL OUT. A number of us stopped to pick them up, and because we were afraid of being separated from the group, we weren't able to get them all. Many thanks to the woman who got the rest. I would like to see one person step forward that actually SAW anyone throw anything at the horses, because from my perspective, it didn't happen. Stop being lazy reporters, and do your job.
Lover of Horses
Nov 2
"Protesters also threw marbles at the feet of horses used by the Vancouver police mounted squad."

This is a lie. I was there when the marbles were released, at one of the intersections on Cook Street where we stopped for ten minutes or thereabouts. My friend and I commented on what a stupid thing that is, dropping marbles onto the street so that the horses, already enslaved and wishing they were in a warm barn somewhere, might slip on them. Others nearby expressed similar comments. We were at the back of the crowd, where I stayed for most of the route, and there were several police officers within earshot. It was clear that the officers were made aware of the marbles. The horses passed without incident.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the marbles were released by agents provocateurs, who have been proven (and those from Montebello may actually go to jail for inciting violence) to be planted into crowds for the purposes of disrupting otherwise peaceful acts of civil disobedience. Janine Bancroft
Nov 2
Global Television weighs in on Nov 3:
"Anti-Olympic protesters say it was not them, but the police themselves, who threw marbles at police horses during the Olympic torch rally in Victoria Friday. They say a police "provocateur" planted among the demonstrators did so to discredit them.
The police, meanwhile, say the allegation is ridiculous.
"The public saw marbles coming from the crowd -- and Victoria police officers saw it," said Sgt. Grant Hamilton of Victoria police.
Tamara Herman, an organizer for the group No2010, said one of the protesters saw someone who was not part of their group drop marbles in the roadway.
Herman said she could not name the witness or offer other details. Nevertheless, she contends that a plainclothes police officer was trying to discredit the protesters.
"The Integrated Security Unit [responsible for Games security] stated they wouldn't rule out using provocateurs. Organizers at the back of the march saw someone they didn't recognize dropping a bag of marbles," Herman said. "

The Martlet (U Vic paper) gets it partly wrong:
"Despite fears of a potential police crackdown on protesters, there were no arrests. The only visible attempted violence came when some protesters- who were not known to No-2010 organizers- threw marbles at the feet of the seven horses being ridden by the mounted squad The Martlet
Nov 23
What really happened? Some kid who plays marbles had his pocket split? Police agent provocateur? Or could it be a free lance provocateur? Don't put it past the far right to do such a thing. One thing for certain is that the media will seize upon any incident real or imagined to intimidate and discredit the forces of progress.

CALL FOR CROSS-CANADA MOBILIZING:
EXTINGUISH THE OLYMPIC TORCH!
* Route details below
* From October 31 2009 - February 12 2010, the Olympic Torch Relay ; A Path of Northern Lights; will be traveling across Canada. The Olympic Resistance Network, based in Vancouver Unceded Coast Salish Territories, is calling on and encouraging our allies to coordinate efforts in over 2000 communities to oppose and resist the Torch Relay.
The origins of the Torch Relay lie in the dark history of the 1936 Games in Berlin, where it was devised as a means to spread Nazi fascism and to promote the Third Reich. The Royal Bank of Canada and Coca Cola are the main sponsors of the 2010 Torch relay. RBC is the top financier of the environmentally devastating Alberta Tar Sands, while Coca Cola has been responsible for health degradation as part of the junk food industry, massive depletion of groundwater and toxic waste pollution in India, and involved in hiring paramilitary groups to violently repress union organizers in Colombia.
It is becoming increasingly evident that far from being simply about sport, the 2010 Olympics is rooted in displacement, corporate greed, militarization, and repression. While Olympic corporate sponsors are getting bailed out, Indigenous lands are being stolen, more people are becoming homeless, thousands are losing their jobs and access to public services, the environment is being destroyed, and civil liberties are being eroded as over a billion dollars are being sunk into security and surveillance measures.
This Torch Relay will be the longest in-country relay in Olympic history, giving us the chance to make some anti-Olympic history!
No Olympics onStolen Native Land!

The 2010 Winter Olympics will take place on unceded Indigenous land from February 12-28, 2010. From real estate developers to private security corporations, the political and corporate elite have the most to gain from the Olympics. Over 13,000 municipal, provincial, national, and military police as well as joint US-Canada military & North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD none the less-Molly )operations are being deployed to protect the Olympic games at the cost of over $1 billion dollars. This is why the 2010 Olympics have been dubbed the "Security Games".
Communities in Vancouver are already feeling the fall-out from increased security. Security cameras and increased policing are invading communities and many Vancouver residences--especially anti-Olympic activists and particularly Indigenous defenders--have been intimidated and harassed by CSIS and VISU (Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit). However, as this panel will show, resistance to the Olympics and its regimes of security has been successful. This forum will discuss current and historical practices of and resistance to national security and the Olympics.

Greetings from Teaching 2010 Resistance
------------
Many educators have observed that there is a great amount of "Olympic Spirit" materials available for teachers, but very little to balance the picture. However, we believe education means presenting balanced information and supporting critical thinking and the development of active citizens. This is why Teaching 2010 Resistance has developed a workshop that is interactive, fun, and based in cooperative learning, in order to examine the social, environmental, and economic issues associated with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. We are willing to present this workshop in classrooms throughout British Columbia, and are happy to personalize the workshop to fit the needs, unit topics, and the educational level of every class.
Contact us via e-mail at orn.youth [at] gmail [dot] com to discuss the possibilities and schedule a workshop with us. Teaching 2010 is also collaborating to produce easy to use resources and lessons for teachers to use in their classrooms. The materials for our workshop and many other educational activities are available at: http://www.teach2010.org
-----Meeting for Educators: October 28th------
This will be a meeting for educational professionals interested in previewing the workshop, brainstorming possibilities for other activities, and collaborating in adapting the workshop and other materials for elementary students.

Defenders of the Land, a cross-Canada network of First Nations in land struggle and fighting for Indigenous rights, has issued a call to organize a cross-Canada week of educational events on Indigenous Rights and Indigenous struggles from October 25-31, 2009. The purpose of this week is to disseminate ideas of Indigenism and to contribute to building across-Canada movement for Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and justice that is led by Indigenous communities with a broad base of informed support. As non-native multiracial supporters, we are allies of frontline Indigenous communities who organize in defense of their land, freedom, and autonomy.
As a grassroots anti-racist and anti-imperialist migrant justice group rising to liberation, No One Is Illegal strongly believes that our movement must always be in active solidarity with self-determination struggles of Indigenous communities who struggle across Turtle Island against centuries of imposed racist, sexist, criminalizing, impoverishing, and genocidal policies. Our event is organized in this spirit of respect with the diverse realities of Indigenous peoples to survive and resist, especially in the face of our society's apathy, the normalization of colonialism, and increasing state repression. We hope you will join us and we encourage others to organize additional events and actions during Indigenous Sovereignty Week.

Whose streets? Our streets! Public space for people, not for corporate profits! We cannot be contained!

National Call To Action Against 2010 Olympic Sponsors: Dirty Money For Dirty Oil
In the lead up to the 2010 Winter Games, host communities have been organizing to expose the impact of the Games on indigenous communities, low-income and homeless populations, public services, and the environment.
While we continue to expose the impact of the Games themselves, anti-Olympic organizers in Vancouver want to make sure that the spotlight is directed at the social and environmental crimes of the corporate sponsors as well.
Some of the sponsors of the 2010 Games are among the most notorious corporate criminals, having devastated communities and environments around the world. These include General Electric, the world’s largest corporation, war profiteer, beneficiary of the 2008 financial bailout in the US and financier of the “ruin of the river” private power projects in BC; and Coca Cola, the corporation responsible for the murder of trade unionists in Latin America, depletion of ground water and destruction of surface water needed by vulnerable communities in India, major profiteer from the commodification of water, and beneficiary of monopoly contracts at schools and universities across the country. Olympic national partner The Royal Bank Canada (RBC) has been identifiedby the Rainforest Action Network as the biggest financiers of the Tar Sands, and has also sponsored Oil Sands Discovery center in Fort McMurray that serves as a propaganda tool for the industry. The Tar Sands are clearly the most environmentally destructive project on the planet, destroying indigenous lands, emitting more Greenhouse Gases than hundreds of countries, poisoning the watershed for the entire Athabasca region.Even the Government of Alberta has now confirmed elevated levels of rare cancers in the downstream Indigenous community of Fort Chipewyan.
TAKING ACTION AT A ROYAL BANK NEAR YOU!
Every Friday at 12 noon - Starting October 16th Beginning in the month of October, we are asking activists to be present at local RBC branches across the country every Friday noon hour with banners and flyers. We hope to have hundreds of actions across the country especially to compliment actions against the launch of the Royal Bank sponsored Olympic Torch Relay in Victoria on Friday October 30th.
>>> FIND A BRANCH NEAR YOU!
Simply google search “the Royal Bank” and the name of your city/town if you are not already aware of a bank near your home or workplace. Be sure to inform us about which branch you will be targeting and we can then ask others to join you or be present at another branch to cover as many locations as we can.
Send an email to: 2010corporatecampaign@gmail.com
A map of all locations will be updated online.
>>> DOWNLOAD MATERIALS
Leaflets will be available to download by October 9th 2009.
2010 CORPORATE CAMPAIGN
This call to action is being coordinated by organizers in Vancouver that have decided to take focused action against the corporate sponsors of the 2010 Games in support of and in solidarity with the diverse movements in opposition to the Olympic Industry and its impacts. There will be future calls to action against other corporate sponsors. This first call for action against the Royal Bank is endorsed by: Indigenous Environmental Network, Rainforest Action Network, Olympic Resistance Network, Oilsands truth.org and Council of Canadians – BC/Yukon Region. If your organization would like to endorse this call please contact us by email: 2010corporatecampaign@gmail.com

Tuesday, October 20 AMAZAY: A film about water
Tuesday October 20th @ 6:30 pm SFU Harbour Center - 515 West Hastings Street - Room 7000$5 By Donation (no one turned away). AMAZAY: A film about water (Vancouver Premiere) In 1968, the creation of the WAC Bennett Dam amassed the world’s largest artificial lake, the Williston Reservoir. The rising waters flooded the Sekani from their homelands and resulted in the destruction of the lower half of their watershed. In 2003 Northgate Minerals proposed to dump 750 million tones of acid tailings into a pristine lake. The Tse Keh Nay said no.
The battle forAmazay Lake began… The Tse Keh Nay - the Takla Lake, Tsay Keh Dene and Kwadacha First Nations– fought through a flawed environmental assessment process for 5 years. This is their story. Film will be followed a presentation by Loretta Williams, from theTsilhqot’in National Government, about their own campaign to protect Teztan Biny (Fish Lake) from the proposed Prosperity Mine. Similar to the Northgate Minerals proposal for Amazay Lake, Taseko Mines Ltd. is also proposing the use of Teztan Biny as a tailings lake, a practice that since 2002 has been supported by controversial changes to the Fisheries Act under Schedule 2. In 2006, two lakes in Newfoundland were approved for destruction and many other lakes in BC, and across the country, are threatened by this loop hole provided by the federal government for the mining industry. The Tsilhqot’in Nation have filed a writ in B.C. Supreme Court claiming their Aboriginal right to fish. The claim, if successful, will prevent Taseko Mines Ltd. from developing its proposed Prosperity Project, 125 km southwest of Williams Lake. The Governments of BC and Canada will most likely appeal a title case decision right to the Supreme Court of Canada and the Tsilhqot’in will need your support!
This event is organized and sponsored by the Council of Canadians and the Wilderness Committee. For more information please emailhgrewal@canadians.org or call 604 340 2455.

ABOUT THE OLYMPIC RESISTANCE NETWORK
The Olympic Resistance Network is primarily based in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories and exists as a space to coordinate anti-2010 Olympics efforts. In doing so, we act in solidarity with other communities across'BC' - particularly indigenous communities who have been defending their land against the onslaught of the Olympics since the bid itself. Our organizing is largely being done under the slogan of "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land," while creating an opportunity for all anti-capitalist, indigenous, anti-poverty, labour, migrant justice, environmental justice, anti-war, and anti-colonial activists to come together to confront this two-week circus and the oppression it represents.

ANTI-TORCH RELAY FESTIVAL:

Five Ring Circus: anti-Torch Relay festival!
Victoria, Fri Oct 30
Get ready - here comes the Olympic Torch!
The whole world will be watching the launch of the Torch Relay, the first official event of the 2010 Olympics here in Victoria on Friday, October 30. Over a thousand journalists from around the world will be here, and huge sections of the Capital Region will be shut down by security police as the relay passes through. The Olympic Committee wants to make the city a no-protest area to protect the "Olympic brand." No way! Over half million dollars is being spent on a "Spirit" party, corporate advertising for the world's worst polluters and heavy-handed policing for the rest of us. Victoria is a free speech zone! Join our Five Ring Circus for Poverty Games, comedy, live music and much more!
Help mock this corporate circus and defend our Charter rights and civil liberties:
- Giant puppets and masks are being created for street theatre, Saturdays from 12 to 3 pm at Camas Books (2590 Quadra, Vic)
- Join the No2010 meetings every Thursday at 6pm, Camas Books
- Attend a Legal Observer training with the BC Civil Liberties Association (dates to be announced)
- Be part of the Pop Ed team visiting local classes and student groups with info about the Torch Relay and Charter rights
- Expose the "Snakes in the Grass" with the Council of Canadians and sing songs with the Raging Grannies
- Join the circus, walk on the zombie march, play an instrument in the marching band, or just bear witness on October 30.

The Right to the City: Civil Liberties and the 2010 Olympics
Forum from: Impact on Communities Coalition and the BC Civil Liberties Association Monday, September 28, 2009 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm SFU Harbour Centre - Fletcher Challenge Theater, 515 West Hastings Street David Eby, Executive Director, BCCLA Matt Hern, Writer Stefanie Ratjen, Board Member, IOCC Harsha Walia, Social Activist Alissa Westergard-Thorpe, Olympic Resistance Network Jeff Derksen, SFU professor David Dennis, President-Elect, United Native Nations (UNN) Moderated by Am Johal, Chair, Impact on Communities Coalition
As the 2010 Olympics approach, the possibility of civil liberties violations have been cited by a number of community organizations as a major concern despite assurances from VANOC, government partners and the Integrated Security Unit that rights will be protected. With 16,500 security personnel scheduled to be part of the largest peacetime operation in Canadian history, impacts are already being felt. Ticketing of residents in the inner-city, home and workplace visits of social activists by members of the Integrated Security Unit and a new bylaw passed by the City of Vancouver which places the rights of corporate sponsors ahead of the rights of citizens are only a few of the immediate impacts. This discussion will take a critical view of the policies and framework which have been established and contextualize these processes as part of broader urban development schemes in the inner-city and methods of criminalizing dissent.

Pivot Legal Society and the BC Civil Liberties Association have teamed up to train legal observers for the 2010 Olympic Games, and we hope you will get involved! Like many of you, Pivot and the BCCLA are concerned that when the more than 7,000 police officers, 5,000 private security guards and 4,500 members of the Canadian armed forces arrive in Vancouver this February, their presence may get in the way of citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures. Bylaws recently passed by the City of Vancouver suggest that we have good reason to be worried. We plan to be ready, with dozens of people prepared to act as eyes and ears on the streets. Legal observers will be trained to watch for violations and to document and report them. As a legal observer, you will help ensure accountability of law enforcement during the Olympic Games. You don’t need to have any legal background to get involved. We encourage you to sign up for a training session and find out more about what’s involved in being a legal observer. Thank-you, as always, for your ongoing support! The Pivot team

Yes to Feb 14th Memorial March - No to Olympics!
A petition and campaign has been initiated by the DTES Power of Women group against the City of Vancouver, VANOC, RCMP, and VPD in their attempts to change next year's historic and sacred Feb 14 March for Murdered and Missing Women in order to ensure the flow of Olympic traffic down Hastings Street. The Power of Women group is based in the DTES neighbourhood and its membership is composed entirely of women living in poverty who have experienced and survived sexual violence and mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional abuse. Please sign the online petition

Text of petition:
It has been brought to our attention that the City of Vancouver, Olympic officials, and the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit are trying to change the historic Feb 14, 2010, March for Murdered and Missing Women in order to ensure the flow of Olympic traffic down Hastings Street. As residents of the DTES and supporters of the Memorial March, we completely oppose any change in date, time, or route of the Memorial March. This March has been happening for 18 years to honour our sisters who die each year due to the violence of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuse. It is something far more significant and sacred than the Olympic Games, which has already increased poverty, homelessness, and policing in our neighbourhood. The government is spending billions on a circus, while putting people aside. We, the women in the Downtown Eastside and our supporters, demand that:
There be no attempts to change or control our Feb 14th Memorial March
Not a single person be forcibly removed, evicted, or displaced from their homes in the Downtown Eastside and any other community due to the Olympics.

ABOUT THE OLYMPIC RESISTANCE NETWORK
The Olympic Resistance Network is primarily based in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories and exists as a space to coordinate anti-2010 Olympics efforts. In doing so, we act in solidarity with other communities across 'BC' - particularly indigenous communities who have been defending their land against the onslaught of the Olympics since the bid itself.
